Robots taking over One of the biggest jumps in technology was creating a working model of an insect brain, inside of a small wire frame body. This "bug" can walk, climb over obstacles and also .... learn! Well, adapt is more truthful. Adapting to terrain is it's specialty. What else is next? Well, we have the first robo dog with AI (Artificial Intelligence). The more he is "taught" the more he can learn. Pretty soon he'll be ready to solve all sorts of problems and be a sage unto the masses, just like Dogbert. But our dreams that started out as mere fantasy many years ago, are now becoming a reality. Soon we may see robots doing all the dirty work for society. Be it cleaning out radioactive chambers inside of Nuclear Reactors, to cleaning the toilets at the Mall. Most people would agree that it's best to save human hands for the important stuff. Honda however is beginning to use the human body for a model with it's robots. The Food and Drug Administration, of all organizations, recently granted an approval for the first robot to be utilized in human medical operations. Geared mainly for laparoscopic surgery the parent company Intuitive Surgical Inc. is already looking ahead prompted by high praise from surgeons. Not only that, but there is also a "robot nurse" in the works as well. Part of a pet project from Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, "Flo the robot nurse" will be a moving communication and statistics station for doctors. Flo will be able to remind patients to take their medication, as well as check vital signs and email them to the doctor. Patients will be able to speak with their doctor through Flo. She's got a built in viewing screen and communications system as well. Although Flo does a lot of the basic work, she certainly can't replace real human interaction, which many attribute to the health of patients. I for one would like to talk to a person instead of a machine. |
